Nabi Yahya: A Pearl Among the Prophets for Indonesian Children

Nabi Nahya story

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Muslim population, with over 90% of its inhabitants identifying as Muslim. Many Indonesians begin learning about Quranic prophets from a young age. Among these prophets, Nabi Yahya stands out as a figure who captures the hearts and imaginations of children. Interestingly, he is also recognized by Christians as John the Baptist (nabi means “prophet” in both Arabic and Indonesian).

This lecture will explore what Nabi Yahya means to children in modern Indonesia. How do they learn about his story, and why does it resonate so deeply with them? Drawing on recent fieldwork in Yogyakarta and the Quran’s three concise yet powerful accounts of his miraculous birth, this talk offers fresh insights into the enduring appeal of this remarkable prophet.

Caroline Lemmens spent much of her working life as a professional cook (she objects to the modern use of the word ‘chef’ for anyone who can hold a wooden spoon), and later as a nurse, caring for adults with cognitive disabilities. Since the end of her second career, she has pursued a Master’s in Theology and she continues to explore her deep fascination with John the Baptist, also known as Nabi Yahya, in her ongoing PhD research.

Broerstraat 9 is next to the accademy building.

This event is part of the Religion, Culture and Society public lecture series 2024-2025.
