Join us for an afternoon seminar to discuss how struggles between Protestants and secularists contributed to the political crisis of interwar Germany. Our guest is Prof. Benjamin Ziemann, a prominent historian of twentieth century Germany, who works in Sheffield and has just published a new book on the Confessing Church pastor Martin Niemoeller, titled: Hitler's Personal Prisoner. The Life of Martin Niemöller (2024).
Prof. Todd Weir will give a summary of his new book on socialist religious politics: Red Secularism: Socialism and Secularist Culture in Germany 1890-1933 (2023). We will have commentary from two Groningen historians, Prof. Arie Molendijk and Maurice Backschat.
