Thesis defence Adriaan Schlebusch

On 25 June Adriaan Schlebusch will be defending his thesis ‘Strategic narratives. Groen van Prinsterer as nineteenth-century statesman-historian’, on the practical politics of 19th-century Dutch statesman and historian Groen van Prinsterer.

Schlebusch’s use of the phenomenological-narrative approach advocated by David Carr to study Groen van Prinsterer as both statesman and historian results in a new, holistic portrayal of him as an anti-revolutionary public figure. Schlebusch sheds new light on the political strategies behind Groen van Prinsterer’s social engagement and the historical significance of his influence on constitutional democracy in the Netherlands.
