Three UG researchers nominated for Woman in the Media Award 2023

Three women affiliated with the UG/UMCG have been nominated for the Woman in the Media Award 2023: Léonie de Jonge, Myrthe Hol and Iris Sommer. This election aims to encourage female experts and public figures to appear more in the media and to encourage editors to highlight them more often. Per province, 10 women are nominated, three of whom in Groningen are affiliated with the university.
Léonie de Jonge
Léonie de Jonge is a scientist at the UG, where she researches far-right parties and groups. She has often appeared in the news to explain the rise of far-right parties in Europe. De Jonge was recently in the media for her interpretation of the PVV's gains in the last elections.
Myrthe Hol
Myrthe Hol is a professor of otology and an ENT specialist at the UMCG. She has spoken several times in the media in the past year about the importance of earplugs at concerts. At concerts, volumes are regularly reached that lead to hearing damage and sometimes even deafness. Hol was in the media this year with an action in which she and other UMCG employees handed out earplugs at the Rammstein concert in the Stadspark.
Iris Sommer
Iris Sommer is a psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry and writer. Her work focuses, among other things, on the differences between the male and female brain. She is also looking at how gut health affects brain disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinsons or schizophrenia. In the summer of 2023, she participated in Lowlands Science, where she collected poop samples from festival-goers.
Voting is open until 14 February.
