UG unveils portraits of former Rectores Magnifici Doeko Bosscher and Elmer Sterken
On Friday 1 September, the University of Groningen unveiled two portraits of former Rectores Magnifici: one of Doeko Bosscher and one of Elmer Sterken. The portraits have been placed on the first floor of the Academy Building, in the corridor near the Economics and Business Faculty room.
Doeko Bosscher was Professor of Contemporary History for many years. He took on the role of Rector Magnificus between 1998 and 2002. His portrait was painted by Jantien de Boer.
Elmer Sterken is Professor of Monetary Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business. He is also Dean of the UG Honours College. He served as Rector Magnificus of our University between 2011 and 2019. His portrait was made by Fred Schley.
The unveiling of the portraits was attended by rectores magnifici of other universities, the Board of the University of Groningen (CvB), prorectors, and professors.
A better reflection
Every year since 2019, the Board of the University commissions portraits of eminent UG members, such as excellent female professors, Spinoza and Nobel laureates, and former rectores magnifici. This policy is aimed at ensuring that the Academy Building portraits increasingly become a better reflection of the academic community in Groningen. The portraits of Doeko Bosscher and Elmer Sterken were missing from the collection, which is why the Board of the University commissioned the painters to make them.
