University of Groningen to provide information during partial solar eclipse on 25 October
A partial solar eclipse can be observed on 25 October, during which the sun's disk will be 25% covered. The phenomenon will start at 11:07 a.m., the peak will be reached at 12.05 p.m., and it will end at 1.06 p.m. These times apply strictly to the city of Groningen.
Telescopes will be set up at several locations in the province, with UG astronomers present to provide information. Special eclipse glasses will also be available.
From the city to the Wadden coast
There are four spots for stargazing in the city of Groningen: the rooftop of Forum Groningen, Broerstraat near the Academy Building, Café Zondag in the Noorderplantsoen, and along the Duisenberg Lake/food court at the Zernike Campus. Along the Wadden coast, eclipse teams will be active at the Lauwersnest, De Rug 1, Lauwersoog, and on the dike at ‘t Zielhoes in Noordpolderzijl.
2025
The last solar eclipse in the Netherlands was on 10 June 2021, and thanks to excellent conditions, it could be clearly seen in the Northern Netherlands. In case of bad weather on 25 October, we will have to wait until 29 March 2025.
