The UG celebrates International Women's Day (video and poem)

8 March is International Women's Day. Such a day cannot go unnoticed in the academic world. The UG is celebrating this day by, for example, awarding the Aletta Jacobs Prize to Rebecca Gomperts. The University aims to create an inclusive and diverse open community, which means that we also want to see more women (from all over the world) in higher academic positions. The Rosalind Franklin Fellowship was established at the UG years ago and the Aletta Jacobs chairs were created in 2020. In the video below, some of our female professors shortly describe what Women's Day means for them. The UG has created an incentive fund for the establishment of the new Aletta Jacobs chair positions, exclusively for female academics. With the help of this fund, the University hopes to promote gender equality at the full professor level within the UG. Through the incentive fund, female academics at the UG are promoted from associate professor to full professor.

The Aletta Jacobs chairs and the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship make an important contribution to the ambition of the UG for 2025: namely, 33% of full professors being female. Right now, there are 17 Aletta Jacobs professors. In this video, some of these academics briefly tell us what Women's Day means for them:

Poem by our poet-in-residence

This year's poet-in-residence, Laura van Meijeren, took inspiration from International Women's Day and wrote a poem with an expressive title: Ode to all her shapes.
