From the Board of the University: UG signs Diversity Charter
On 10 June, together with a large number of companies and organizations, President of the Board of the University of Groningen Jouke de Vries signed the Diversity Charter. Through signing the Charter, the UG commits itself to policy-making that promotes diversity and inclusion within the University. To this end, the new, soon-to- be-formed Diversity and Inclusion Office will play an important role in coordinating existing initiatives and setting up new ones.
The UG has envisioned various concrete goals to promote diversity and inclusion:
- A 33% female professor ratio by 2025.
- A publicly accessible vision on diversity and inclusion.
- The formation of a Diversity and Inclusion Office to coordinate initiatives and policy around diversity and inclusion.
- The appointment of an ombudsperson focused on social safety and inclusion, who will act alongside and together with the confidential advisor and the Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer.
Jouke de Vries: ‘In our open academic community, we foster the differences between individuals, as these only make us stronger. At the same time, we must ensure that everyone can participate in an equal manner. This Charter will help us to be vigilant and continue to take action in this area.’
The UG will draw up a plan of approach, in which the goals and investments will be clearly formulated. The University will also regularly report on progress in this area and share the experiences and knowledge gained with other companies and organizations.
