Wreath placement by the Board of the University to remember WWII

On the morning of Tuesday 4 May, President of the Board of the University Jouke de Vries, Rector Magnificus Cisca Wijmenga and student assessor Teun Havinga placed a wreath in front of the steps of the Academy Building and held a moment of silence. They did this to commemorate all of the students and staff of the UG who died in the Second World War.
The UG remembrance ceremony usually takes place at the two monuments dedicated to fallen students and staff members, located between the Academy Building staircases. Due to the coronavirus it now took place in front of the steps. This evening, the wreath will be taken inside and placed at the two monuments inside the Academy Building.

Every year, the UG joins the municipal remembrance ceremony organized by Stichting 4 Mei Herdenking and participates in a walking procession. This begins at the Jewish monument on Hereweg and ends at the St. George and the Dragon monument in the Martinikerk grounds, where a wreath is then laid. This year, just as last year, the walking procession will not take place due to the coronavirus.
