28 April 2021
Podcast

In Science is the University of Groningen podcast. On Tuesday 20 April, the start of the Aletta Jacobs Year (a year in which the UG is honouring Aletta Jacobs) was given extra impetus with the launch of a special podcast edition about women in academia. The second and final part of this special edition will be published today. In this English episode, Arjen Dijkstra and Tina Kretschmer will interview special guests Cisca Wijmenga, Amina Helmi and Andrea Meagher.

In 1871, Aletta Jacobs became the first woman to graduate at a Dutch university after having enrolled at the University of Groningen. During this special podcast, Arjen and Tina chat with their guests about the legacy of Aletta Jacobs; what she has meant for women in academia and women in general, and the current situation in the Netherlands.

Background of the guests

In Science is presented by the head of the University Museum Arjen Dijkstra, and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences Tina Kretschmer. They will interview Cisca Wijmenga, the first female Rector Magnificus of the UG, and astronomer Amina Helmi. Helmi is Professor of Dynamics, Structure and Formation of the Milky Way. Andrea Meagher, who is currently following Curatorial Studies at the UG, is the third guest in this episode.
