Prof. Poppema receives badge of honour from University of Oldenburg
Professor Sibrand Poppema was awarded the University of Oldenburg’s badge of honour during the opening of its academic year on 18 October. In his introductory speech, President of the University of Oldenburg Professor Hans Michael Piper praised Poppema’s accomplishments, first as Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and then, from 2008, as President of the Board of the University of Groningen, in shaping the collective European degree programme in Medicine and playing a crucial role in its development.
This unique cross-border collaboration in medical education resulted in the positive recommendation from the German Council of Science and Humanities to the regional government of Lower Saxony in 2010 to establish a medical faculty in Oldenburg. Through this collaboration, Poppema, former President of the Board of the University of Groningen, greatly contributed to the development of the University of Oldenburg, said Piper.
