Friday 10 November: University of Groningen Open Day

Twelve thousand visitors from home and abroad, almost 7,400 of whom are secondary-school pupils, are coming to the Open Day of the University of Groningen on Friday 10 November. They can visit up to four departments throughout the day. Wherever possible, the departments will present themselves in their own faculties, which are spread throughout the city. The pupils and their parents can also follow lectures, visit information fairs, follow a workshop on choosing what to study and go on a city walk.

Follow a lecture, talk to students, lecturers and study advisors, meet the people that you may be studying with next year and collect information. That’s what the Open Day of the University of Groningen on 10 November is all about. It’s also about getting a feel for the atmosphere and for the city of Groningen, where the prospective students may be living for the next four or five years. All Bachelor’s programmes of the University are represented at the Open Day. Registration is mandatory.

Lectures on specific themes and workshops on choosing what to study
It is difficult to decide what to study. Visitors at the Open Day will therefore be able to follow a workshop to help them decide. This will get them thinking about such matters as who they are, where their strengths lie, what they want to do and which degree programmes suit them best. Alongside presentations on the degree programmes, there will be lectures on themes such as how to study, budget and find a room, the difference between a university of applied sciences and a research university, student life in Groningen and the possibility of spending some time studying abroad. Special lectures in both English and German have also been planned for prospective students from abroad.

Information fairs
How do you enrol at the University? How much can you borrow per month? What are the latest developments concerning decentralized selection and matching? What facilities are available for students with a disability? These and many more questions will be answered at two general information fairs in the Academy Building in the city centre and the Duisenberg Building on Zernike Campus.

Into the City
For those who are not yet familiar with Groningen, there will be the opportunity to explore the centre with a student guide. Prospective students from abroad and their parents are most likely to take this opportunity. If the experience of 2016 is anything to go by, an Open Day with 12,000 visitors – a new record – will not go unnoticed by businesses in the city centre.
