Groningen sociologists in action during anti-bullying week
In the Week Against Bullying from 18 to 22 September 2017, various members of the Sociology Department of the University of Groningen will give lectures and workshops on bullying and social safety. In addition, a parent toolkit ‘Towards a positive school atmosphere together with parents’, developed together with the Dutch Youth Institute (NJI), will be launched.
Lectures and children’s lecture
On 21 September Beau Oldenburg will give a lecture for anti-bullying coordinators at the local health authority GGD West Brabant in Breda, and on 22 September for directors, teachers and prospective teachers at the Marnix Academy in Utrecht.
On 19 and 20 September Gijs Huitsing will present a study day for secondary school teachers on bullying and social safety in Amsterdam. Secondary schools can also book this study day this schoolyear for the purposes of team training.
On 21 September Prof. René Veenstra will give a lecture in NEMO Amsterdam to about 400 children for the Children’s University. This edition of the Children’s University is being organized in collaboration with GGD Amsterdam.
Parent toolkit: ‘Towards a positive school atmosphere together with parents’
A positive atmosphere at school is important for the general wellbeing of the children and for their learning achievements. Parents are a crucial factor in this respect. But how can you work on creating a nice atmosphere at school if you do not agree with parents about how you interact? Or more specifically, how can you effectively counter bullying if school and parents have a completely different view on it? Many schools struggle with such questions, which is why the UG and NJI have developed the toolkit ‘Towards a positive school atmosphere together with parents’. The toolkit and the associated training offer starting points for increasing parental involvement in general and specifically for creating a positive school atmosphere.
Partners of the Week Against Bullying
The Sociology Department and the associated Kennis- en expertisecentrum sociale veiligheid en groepsvorming [Knowledge and Expertise Centre for Social Safety and Group Formation] are partners of the national Week Against Bullying, which is organized by the Stichting School & Veiligheid [The School and Safety Foundation].
