The foundation of Prince Bernhard Junior donates to research of the UG
The researchers Joost Kluiver and Anke van den Berg have been awarded with a grant worth €772,000 from the Lymph&Co foundation for research into lymphoma. Central to this research is a recently discovered major network of genes that strongly influences the growth of lymph node cancer cells. The aim of the researchers is to gain more insight in this network and the genes and they hope to gain more understanding of the process of the disease. Moreover, they hope to find new leads for the development of alternative therapeutic approaches.
The Lymph&Co foundation was initiated by Bernhard van Oranje, alumnus of the UG, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2013. The donation of Lymph & Co is made available through the Ubbo Emmius Fund of the UG. The research is conducted at the Department of Pathology of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
Lymphoma
The Lymph&Co foundation aims to promote scientific research into the development and treatment of lymphoma and also wants to generate more attention for this type of cancer. Lymphoma is a cancer of the white blood cells. Although in recent years the treatments have been improved, every year many patients pass away because of the disease or the effects of intensive treatments. It is clear that there is still a great need for new, more effective therapies with fewer side effects and less negative consequences in the long term. In order to make this possible, it is important to correctly understand the change of the cellular processes in the tumor cells.
About the Ubbo Emmius Fund
Especially for its fundraising, the University established the Ubbo Emmius Fund (UEF). The UEF encourages mutual commitment between society and the University by organizing activities for alumni and relations and raise funds for research and education at the University. The UEF is recognized as a public benefit institution (in Dutch: ANBI).
