UG in 113th place in QS University Rankings
The University of Groningen (UG) is in 113th place in the QS World University Rankings this year. Last year the UG was in 100th place. The new ranking list was published on Tuesday morning, 6 September.
The University of Groningen is in the Top 75 of the two oldest and most prestigious ranking lists. In August it was announced that the University climbed again in the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), to 72nd place. In the Times Higher Education ranking list, the UG is in 74th place.
The organization behind the QS ranking list changed the methodology for compiling the list last year. The UG has several problems with the current methodology. The most important is that reputation now counts for no less than 50% of the total score, with an unclearly definied group of peers assessing this reputation. The methodology behind assessing the citations per staff member is also not transparent or comprehensive. The same weighting is given artificially to 5 academic fields, independent of actual production. QS has no data relating to numbers of staff in each of these fields, and thus the end result, which is moreover ‘normalized’ per country, is extremely unreliable.
