Check out the new Energy Academy Europe building on the 'Dag van de Bouw' (Construction Day) on Saturday 4 June

On the 'Dag van de Bouw', you can take a look behind the scenes of the normally inaccessible site of a unique construction project: the Energy Academy Europe (EAE) at the Zernike Campus Groningen. The EAE will be the most sustainable educational building in the Netherlands. You are warmly invited on Saturday June 4th, between 10:00 and 16:00hrs. to see the new building of the University of Groningen, together with EAE experts. We will welcome you at the Bernoulliborg , the blue building next to the construction site.

Role model for natural energy sources and earthquake safety

The new Energy Academy Europe building is due to be completed in September, so quite a number of the innovative energy measures can be seen already. Especially, the inhabitants of Groningen know that the use of natural gas and other polluting and inefficient energy sources should belong to the past. The building serves as an example of how to deal innovatively with energy. For example by using a solar chimney, an inside garden for climate control, uniquely placed solar panels for ample natural light, rainwater harvesting, geothermal heating and cooling, and more cutting-edge renewable energy solutions. The EAE is certified with the highest possible rating in sustainability performance and is part of the so-called BREEAM Outstanding class.

At the same time the Energy Academy Europe will be the first new major earthquake-safe building in Groningen.

Programme Saturday 4 June

On the 'Dag van de Bouw', construction sites throughout the Netherlands open their gates to visitors. The Energy Academy Europe welcomes visitors between 10.00 and 16.00 hrs. with a guided tour, lectures, demonstrations and an information market. It is a unique opportunity for the public from the region to see sustainable solutions whose standards are so high that there is no similar educational building in the Netherlands.

Residents and builders EAE

Building consortium Friso Bouwgroep and Koopmans Bouwgroep are working hard to realize the building along with Engie (formerly Cofely). The team also consists of architect consortium Broekbakema and pvanb architects, ICS Adviseurs, Arup, Ingenieursbureau Wassenaar and DGMR. The future inhabitants are: the University of Groningen / ESRIG, Hanze University Groningen, Energy Academy Europe, Energy Valley and the Energy Delta Institute. Research, education and business in the EAE come together to work on the transition to a sustainable energy future.
