Thijs Jong improves huge emissions trading dataset
Ph.D. candidate Thijs Jong, M.Sc., participates in the 'Ownership Links and Enhanced European Union Transaction Log (EUTL) Dataset Project' of the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. This project on transactions in emission allowances is coordinated by Professor Denny Ellerman. Thijs Jong is supervised at the University of Groningen by Professor Oscar Couwenberg and Dr Edwin Woerdman.
Thijs Jong and some other researchers from Europe succeeded in constructing a dataset that links the allowance transaction accounts under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) to the owners of those accounts for the period 2005-2007. The original EUTL records all allowance allocations and transfers, but it does not indicate the ultimate corporate owner. Meaningful analyses of firm behavior under the EU ETS are not possible without matching accounts to firms. The enhanced dataset fills this gap. The novel database, a technical note and details on the researchers involved are available at: fsr.eui.eu
