Zernike Campus: top location in the field of energy and the bio-based economy
The University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, the municipality of Groningen and the province of Groningen want to expand the Zernike Campus into a top location for education, research and entrepreneurship in the field of energy and the bio-based economy. These ambitious plans were recently formalized by the parties in a cooperation covenant. Zernike Campus Groningen should expand into an Energy Campus, where knowledge development and the societal outreach of sustainable energy and clean energy technology can blossom.
Jan de Jeu, Vice President of the Board of the University, underlined the importance of the combination of top talent, good teaching and research facilities and excellent cooperation between the authorities, knowledge institutions and business. ‘The Healthy Ageing Campus at the UMCG is a successful example of this valuable combination. We are now taking the next important step with the Zernike Campus Groningen.’
Energy Academy Europe
De Jeu: ‘The University of Groningen has been investing in the Zernike Campus for over fifty years. In the past seven years alone, over € 170 million has been invested in new facilities for the life sciences, mathematics and computer sciences. For the next seven years the University has an investment programme for the Zernike Campus for another € 200 million, intended for the construction of the Energy Academy Europe and for building a new teaching and research facility for chemistry, physics, astronomy and industrial engineering.’
