Substantial grant for research into Parkinson's
A partnership of researchers including the Groningen cell biologists Arjan Kortholt and Peter van Haastert has been awarded a USD 1,300,000 grant by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Approximately USD 350,000 of which will be made available to the Groningen researchers .
Their project aims to determine the three-dimensional structure and the functional mechanism of the protein LRRK2. Mutations in this protein's gene are suspected of being connected to hereditary forms of Parkinson's disease. The researchers are expecting to gain a better understanding of how Parkinson's disease begins and hope to be able to contribute to drug development.
The research project will be conducted by the Groningen group in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund. The ‘LRRK2 Biological structure and function’ consortium further includes researchers from Emerald Biostructures, Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, SomaLogic and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
