University of Groningen climbs Webometrics Ranking
Last year saw the University of Groningen climb up the
Webometrics Ranking
. As well as now being the second Dutch university in the list, the University of Groningen holds 13th place among European universities and 77th in the world.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is compiled by the Spanish Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas
, and is largely based on the number and distribution of academic publications on the internet. Articles are judged on Presence, Impact, Openness and Excellence. The University of Groningen scored particularly well on the Openness criterion (12th world-wide). This indicator examines the number of ‘rich files’ (PDF, doc, docx, ppt) published on websites and visited via the academic search engine Google Scholar. It gives an idea of the scope of the publications and their traceability. This visibility is partly down to the accessibility of theses via the repository of the University of Groningen Library.
Open Access Week
The University of Groningen is keen to make academic publications widely available. As the accessibility of publications is an important factor in determining the profile of researchers, the University applauds the increasing tendency to publish via ‘Open Access’. As part of Open Access Week (22-28 October), on 26 October from 1 to 4.30 p.m., the University of Groningen is organizing a seminar entitled ‘ Towards sustainable data sharing’ .
