This biography focuses on to the clergyman and politician Van der Heide, who joined the Social Democratic Labour Party in 1896, at a time when the gap between Christianity and socialism was unbridgeable. This tension between religion and ideology led to the story of a man who chose for justice from an evangelical point to view and chose for the dispossessed, and who opted for socialism as a strategy for action.
