Regulating smart grids

14 July 2011

The latest edition of the Dutch Journal of Energy Law (Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Energierecht) features an article by Hans Vedder on the regulation of smart grids. Smart grids are realised by integrating ICT and electricity networks in a way which enables two-way flows of electricity and a more flexible and "smarter" use of the electricity grid.

As a result, the grid can be managed in a more efficient way. Also, it will be able to better cope with the fluctuating supply of renewable electricity. The article concludes that current regulation is in the way of the transition to a smarter electricity grid. Professor Vedder signals a number of problems related to the current regulatory framework and the management of the smart grid.
