Groningen Faculty of Law appoints six visiting professors
This academic year, the Groningen Centre for Law and Governance (GCL) of the Faculty of Law will be welcoming six visiting professors, who will each spend a number of months per year in Groningen. By attracting internationally prominent scholars to Groningen, the GCL is stimulating the internationalization of law research. The visitors programme aims to develop lasting partnerships between researchers from Groningen and abroad.
The Groningen Centre for Law and Governance is a research institute founded in 2008 by the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen. It conducts law research in the field of the interaction between public and private interests. In 2009, the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance (NILG) was founded together with the VU University Amsterdam Centre for Law and Governance. NILG is an open platform for law research into the interaction between public and private interests.
Visitors programme
Through the visitors programme, which will run for five years, the GCL offers scholars from other universities the chance to work with the Groningen research community.
Visiting professors are appointed for a period of a few months a year, during which time they and the departments to which they are attached will develop new lines of research and joint research projects.
The visitors programme will be headed by the recently appointed Academic Director of the GCL, Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi.
Six visiting professors
Recruitment was wide in five subfields of law. The visiting professors thus not only come from various different countries, they also represent extensive expertise in the various legal fields. The appointees are:
- Michael Bohlander (criminal law; Durham University, United Kingdom)
- Suzanne Comtois (public law; Université de Sherbrooke, Canada)
- Francesco Giglio (private law; University of Manchester, United Kingdom)
- Hanri Mostert (private law; University of Cape Town, South Africa)
- Sir Richard Plender (Economic and Business law, Judge of the High Court, Queen’s Bench Division, United Kingdom)
