Prestigious Keetje Hodshon Prize for Groningen theologian

He investigated astrological and physiognomic manuscripts from Qumran. These texts relate astrological matters, physical characteristics, and people’s destinies with each other according to a worldview of cosmic sympathy. Popović compared the Qumran texts with Babylonian, Greco-Roman and other Jewish texts. He showed that Early Judaism was influenced by scientific and scholarly developments outside Judaism, especially by Babylonian and Hellenistic sciences.

The Keetje Hodshon Prize for the field of Philosophy/Theology is awarded once every four years. Previous recipients in this field were Wim Drees and Lodi Nauta. In the fields of literature and history the prize has been awarded amongst others to Frits van Oostrom and Willem Frijhoff. The prize will be handed to Popović during a ceremony in Haarlem on June 20.
