HANS RIJPKEMA - Creature Technology Lead Rhythm & Hues Studios, Los Angeles


Rhythm & Hues is a company that produces cutting edge computer-generated special effects for the filmindustry, themepark-rides, or commercials (www.rhythm.com).


Hans Rijpkema worked at SCAN (Stichting Computer ANimatie Groningen) as a researcher. Since 1996 Hans works at Rhythm and Hues Studios as a character setup lead and computer graphics software developer. He concentrates mostly on animation reserach and development and his expertise is character rigging and skinning. He implemented flexible body dynamics, inverse kinematics solvers, subdivision surfaces, skin-muscle simulation, and fur grooming/dynamics modules.

 

His credits include: Scooby Doo, Cats & Dogs, Harry Potter, Dr. Dolittle 2, The 6th day, Hollow Man, Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas, Frequency, Babe: Pig in the City, The Mystery Men, Speed 2: Cruise Control, Mousehunt, Coca-Cola polar bear commercials and the newly released film ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ( www.narnia.com).

 

 

On occasional visits Hans gave impressive lectures on his activities at Rhythm & Hues for a selected audience in Groningen . This time the theme will be

 

The Visual Effects of Narnia: the making of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

 

An indepth look into the technology that was used to bring Aslan the Lion, the centaurs, minotaurs, gryphons and many other mythological creatures to life as well as the challenges of creating the large battle sequences between two computer generated armies.
