History of student life
The city of Groningen is well known as a lively student town. From it's first beginnings the university has attracted students from all corners of the Netherlands, as well as from abroad.
Student life in Groningen has therefore always been rich and diverse. Groningen also can boast the oldest student fraternity in the Netherlands, dating from 1815.
Student life
The university provided all sorts of facilities for students, such as a burse, a student refectory, where students could eat for a small fee.
Student fraternities
For a long time the university banned the formation of student fraternities, because the board of governors was afraid of disturbances of the peace and the harmful effect these could have on the university's good standing.
