Why should I use the research information system Pure?

As a researcher at the UG or UMCG, you are expected to register your publications in the central research information system Pure. Only what is registered in Pure counts in the official figures used for accounting to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), and other stakeholders via Annual Report, KUOZ reports and the quality control research (SEP) reports.

Up to several thousand outputs are registered annually in Pure. Many external literature sources are scanned daily for outputs of every WP member who has checked this option in Pure (automated search). This saves manual entry of the many required input fields and reduces the work of researchers; you only have to respond to an e-mail confirming your (co-)authorship.

Currently, sources such as Scopus and PubMed are still the most important in terms of size, especially for beta, medical and most social sciences. With the growth of Open Access, it can be expected that important source systems for the humanities and law will also become available, so that researchers in those disciplines will eventually have to enter less and less of their own data in Pure. Where automated search does not yet work sufficiently, we ask you to enter your publications manually.

Pure is the source system (and repository) that fills the UG's public Research Portal with data. The Pure Research Portal is the business card and showcase of research at the RUG. It shows profiles of researchers, faculties and research institutes, making them much easier to find by the most frequently used external search engines. The same applies to all outputs and activities registered in Pure, including those not included in international citation databases.

Pure is used for the annually requested research data (output and activities) for annual reporting and accountability to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (via Universiteiten van Nederland (UNL): the so-called KUOZ (Kengetallen Universitair Onderzoek) report.

Once every six years, all 27 RUG research institutes must be assessed by an independent Peer Review Committee according to the guidelines of the national Strategy Evaluation Protocol (SEP) and the Groningen Research Assessment Protocol (GRAP). The SEP and GRAP prescribe mandatory inclusion of output figures and tables, for which Pure serves as the only recognised source.

The data in Pure is also used in preparing annual scientific reports of faculties, institutes and research schools.

Pure is the primary source of output that can be analysed directly using the advanced benchmark tools SciVal (bibliometrics, for academic impact) and Altmetric.com (alternative metrics such as citations from policy documents of government bodies, Wikipedia or the most internationally renowned newspapers, for societal impact). Therefore, keeping Pure as complete and correct as possible is essential for reliable and high-quality analysis.

The research information from Pure can be used during annual R&O discussions between individual researcher and supervisor.

Each individual item is checked, corrected and completed by the UB validation team. Moreover, full text files are searched and, if necessary, data is uploaded. Copyrights are also checked, after which the research output is validated and made visible on the research portal.

The university library checks and validates the research output in Pure. The faculties are responsible for checking and validating activities, press/media items, prizes and other output in Pure.

In addition to research output, the researcher can also store activities (conferences, lectures et al.), press/media items (media appearances, interviews et al.), prizes, projects, awards and more in Pure, and present them with Pure.
