As of April 2025, the UG is a sponsoring member of Peer Community In (PCI). PCI is a scholar-led, non-profit organization offering peer review, recommendation and publication of scientific articles in open access for free. PCI is currently supported by 160+ universities and research institutions worldwide. This initiative offers a transparent, inclusive and affordable alternative publication model which is in line with the UG’s open science values and objectives.

There are no concrete indications yet that the findability of articles has been affected. Information specialists at the UB are monitoring the situation closely.
The University of Groningen (UG) and the UMCG participate in a national open access agreement with the publisher PLOS. The agreement applies to seven journals. All publication types are covered under the agreement. The deal has different financial implications for UG and UMCG authors

On 18 March 2025, staff members of the UG will strike in protest against the cuts to higher education. Staff members of the UB will also put their work on hold to draw attention to the consequences of the planned cuts. As a result, some library services may be disrupted throughout the day.

As of 2025, the UG became a subscribing member of White Horse Press (WHP), an independent, family-run academic publisher specialising in environmental humanities and social sciences. The membership package includes five journals.
The University Library is discarding several parts of its physical collection to make room for, among other things, the placement of new literature and the creation of innovative teaching spaces. After careful selection of publications, alternative uses are considered that contribute to the preservation of scientific resources and accessibility of knowledge.
The UG has renewed several existing open access agreements. Through these agreements UG researchers get reading access to scientific journals, as well as the right to publish open access at no extra cost.

All UG dissertations from 2024 have been received in digital format. The PhD regulations require that PhD students submit the print and digital versions of their dissertations at least three weeks prior to the promotion date.

The University of Groningen launches the second funding cycle of the open access book fund. UG- or UMCG-affiliated authors can apply for funding the publication of their monograph or edited volume. Please note the key changes from the previous funding cycle.
As of 1 January 2025, the Library Support Desk in the UB City Centre will have adjusted opening hours:

Weekdays: open from 8.30 a.m. until 4.30 p.m.

The UB City Centre will remain open for visitors as usual, with the Facility Desk available to assist with general questions about the building.
As of today, the University Library offers access to Brill's Encyclopedia of Hinduism Online.

The Dutch Research Council NWO supports academic journals that wish to transition from a subscription model to an open access model in which authors do not have to pay publication fees. They can soon apply for a subsidy from a new programme: the Diamond Open Access fund. A total of €500,000 is available in this round.
