Modification reuse copyright materials: implications for education
When (re)using texts and images for educational purposes, it is important to take into account the copyrights attached to the material. For many years, Dutch universities have had agreements on this subject with the UvO Foundation, which represents the publishers, which are laid down in the ‘Easy Access Agreement’ . The universities pay a buy-out sum for so-called short and medium-term acquisitions.
UNL and UvO Foundation have now reached a new agreement on this for the next three years.
What does this mean for lecturers?
-
Teachers can use material up to and including 40 pages with a maximum of 20% of the entire work from which it is taken. In the previous agreement, this was 50 pages and 25% of the size of the entire work.
Please note: The UG policy stating that no Pdfs of copyrighted material may be posted on Brightspace still applies.

Over the next three years, universities will work on a new model for the future, which will be charged for actual use. In this, the development of the CopyRIGHT tool (an initiative of UNL, Surf and the universities) will play an important supporting role.
