More than 50 UG-articles published open access under 'Taverne'

21 March 2019

Since earlier this year, the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VNSU) has given open access an extra boost by making publications available after a period of six months via the University repository; at the UG through the research database Pure.

Good progress has been made: more than 50 articles by UG-authors have been published open access so far within this pilot. This is an important milestone, as open access is one of the University’s strategic focus areas.

This pilot project, in short 'project Taverne', allows authors''of a short scientific work funded either wholly or partially by Dutch public funds is entitled to make that work publicly available for no consideration following a reasonable period of time after the work was first published, provided that clear reference is made to the source of the first publication of the work.' [Article 25fa Aw Dutch Copyright law]

Particularly if research has been publicly funded, both the UG and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) want to ensure that resulting publications can be publicly accessed. Agreements have been made with many publishers about open access publishing. Unfortunately, this is not possible for all types of publications or journals. This pilot project offers an alternative, thanks to the Taverne Amendment to the Copyright Act. The ambition of the Netherlands is to achieve 100% open access by 2020.
