On 1 January 2010, Klugkist handed over his duties to his successor, drs Marjolein Nieboer. After 22 male predecessors she is the first woman to hold the office of librarian in the University of Groningen Library. Since 1998 Nieboer had been deputy librarian which made her an experienced library executive when she took office. Together with her team, she completed the library’s reorganisation within one year. Partly for financial reasons the university’s library facilities were clustered, relocating the collections in the Faculties of Philosophy, Arts, Theology, Law, and Social Sciences to the central university library on Broer Square. The collection in the Faculty of Mathematics & Physics joined the library of Economics & Business Management / Spatial Sciences on Zernike campus. A medical library was kept in the Academic Medical Centre Groningen. The central library building was renovated which allowed for more study spots.
