Biography

Albertus Zijlstra (Zuidhorn, 21 Februari 1874 – Groningen, 1 June 1964) was a teacher and a politician. He was the spokesperson for educational matters of the ARP (Anti Revolutionary Party) contingent of the Dutch House of Representatives. He worked as a teacher in Friesland and Groningen, before becoming a journalist. He was active in local politics and combined his duties in The Hague with duties for the Groningen city council.

As a member of the House of Representatives, he committed himself to improving primary education, and introduced new legislation that would lower the teacher to student ratio in rural classrooms. This legislation would eventually be adopted across all schools. He was a co-founder of the GPV (Reformed Political Alliance) in 1948 and in 1952, he ran for a spot in the House of Representatives as the party’s lead candidate, but he was not elected.

Acquisition

The collection was handed over to the University Library in 1984 by Mrs Bouman.
