Provenance and acquisition
Biography: Hendrik de Waard (Groningen, 20 April 1922 - Groningen, 11 August 2008) was a Dutch physicist. He attended the Praedinius Gymnasium (1934-1940), and he studied at the University of Groningen (1940-1949), except for two years during World War II. His earliest research concerned atomic physics, and after the war he focused his studies on demonstrating the polarisation of electrons.
In 1948, he turned to the field nuclear spectroscopy, and in 1954 he received his PhD with a thesis entitled Scintillation coincidence studies of the decay of 181Hf and 193Os and the isomerism of odd proton nuclei. After a stay in Sweden (as a lecturer at the University of Uppsala) and Finland, where he conducted pioneering research, he returned to Groningen in 1955. There he held the chair of experimental physics at the university from 1956. In 1958, this was followed by a full professorship in the same subject.
In 1962, he was a guest professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Here he began to research the subject of Mössbauer spectroscopy. Once De Waard was back in Groningen, he expanded this research together with Dr. S.A. Drentje. De Waard spent forty years of his life studying the Mössbauer effect. This made him one of the earliest researchers to study this phenomenon. Later on, he focused on magnetism in bacteria, in particular magnetotactic bacteria, together with Professor Richard Frankel.
