Biography:

Piet Tauber was born on 14 April 1927 in Oudorp. After primary school, he attended mulo. Even then, the young Tauber made construction drawings and building plans, and read architecture books and magazines.

In 1940, he started HBS. By the end of 1944, however, he had to go into hiding for the ‘Arbeitseinsatsz’. After HBS, Tauber studied architectural engineering at TH Delft.

In architectural engineering, he joined students who advocated a renewal of the profession. During several study trips, he gained a lot of inspiration. In his fourth year of study, Tauber wrote a thesis on Dutch seventeenth-century architect Philip Vingboons. It characterised him that, unlike some of his fellow students, he did not seek a break with the past but pursued the widest possible range of architectural means.

Tauber was also endowed professor of ‘architectural design’ at the TH of Delft.

Among other things, Tauber designed the University Library in Groningen (1977-1987). In addition to his work as an architect, he began to design cars and bicycles in the early 1980s.

Piet Tauber died on 13 May 2017 in Alkmaar.
