Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Philip Bartlett Smith was raised in New York City. He studied physics at the California Institute of Technology and at the University of Illinois. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a PhD. His research focused on measuring the nuclear reactions after neutrino emission in radioactive   decay of 7Be. Between 1950 and 1957, Smith worked at the University of São Paulo. After this, he        moved to the Netherlands where he took up a teaching position at Utrecht University. In 1963 he was   made a professor of experimental physics at the University of Groningen. He researched nuclear physics until his retirement in 1988.

Furthermore, Philip Smith was an active board member and secretary of the Dutch Pugwash organization between 1963 and 2003.
