Provenance and acquisition

Biography:

Jacobus Laurens Sirks was born in Rotterdam in 1837. He studied languages and physics in Leiden. In 1864, he received his doctorate from the faculty of ‘Letteren’ (arts).

Sirks held several teaching positions in Voortberg (Instituut Kramers, 1859-1861), Leeuwarden (gymnasium 1861) and Groningen (gymnasium 1861-1864). At the gymnasium of Groningen he worked his way up to deputy principal (1872) and principal (1873). In 1901, Sirks left the position due to health problems. In 1892, he was awarded an honourary doctorate in mathematics and physics at the University of Groningen. Jacobus Laurens Sirks passed away in Groningen in 1905.

• ‘Over een interferentiemicroscoop’ (on interference microscopy), in Handelingen van het vierde Nederlandsch Natuur- en geneeskundig congres, gehouden te Groningen op den 7den en 8sten April 1893.

• J.L. Sirks, On the astigmatism of Rowland’s concave gratings. Eerste sectie. Verhandelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen te Amsterdam (Amsterdam 1894).
