Provenance and acquisition

Biography

B.V.A. Röling (1906-1985) was named a professor of international law and criminal law at the University of Groningen in 1949. After the war, he had worked as a judge in Middelburg and Utrecht, but he gained fame as a judge on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East between 1946 and 1948, also known as the Tokyo Trial. Between 1949 and 1957, he served as a Dutch delegate at meetings of the United Nations General Assembly six times. For this organization, Röling was an active member of several committees, serving as their chair or secretary.

In 1962, Röling was one of the founding members of the Institute of Polemology, which was an organization dedicated to the study of the causes of war and the possible peaceful conflict resolutions. Bernhard was the father of Matthijs Röling, the artist who painted a mural in the reception area of the Academy building at the University of Groningen.
