Provenance and acquisition

          Biography

Jacobus Gerhardus Riewald was born in 1910, in Doesburg. In 1953, Riewald graduated from the Catholic University in Nijmegen, with a dissertation entitled Sir Max Beerbohm: Man and Writer. A critical     analaysis with a Brief Life and a Bibliography. He later worked as a professor of post-medieval English            literature and American literature at the University of Groningen. In 1967, Riewald held a public lecture            on the poetry of Robert Lowell. Riewald passed away in Groningen, in 2006.

During Riewald’s tenure at the University of Groningen, he wrote the work Reynier Jansen of       Philadelphia, early American printer: a chapter in seventeenth-century nonconformity (1970). Reynier      Jansen was born in the Netherlands, living in Harlingen and Alkmaar and working as a cord-winder. In   1699, Jansen moved to America. He spent time in Penssylvania, where he would serve as the Quaker’s       only printer until 1705.
