Provenance and acquisition

Biography

As a child, Nel Ojemann struggled with learning how to read, until her mother started associating words with pictures and other objects for her. The word ‘krom’ (crooked) was accompanied by the image of her aunt Jans, whose last name was also ‘Krom’. These associations helped Ojemann discover that letters had meaning.

Nel Ojemann attended the hbs-b, where she excelled in the sciences, but struggled with languages. She wanted to study medicine, but ended up studying nursing in Amsterdam, after getting a teaching degree. While she was mother to three children and worked teaching younger children at the Montessorischool in Bussum, she went back to school for a mo-A Pedagogiek, which would allow her to teach at the high school level.

She moved to Amsterdam and works at the Pedologisch Instituut, while also attending the University of Amsterdam to study educational theory. At this time, she was also working to train remedial teachers, at the first institute of its kind in Amsterdam. In 1966, she gets her degree in educational theory and psychology and starts working for Professor van Gelder, an educational theorist, at the Univeristy of Groningen.

Until her retirement in 1979, she taught at the UG. In 1990, she founded the Ojemann bureau, to do diagnostic research into learning problems and visual thinking.
