Biography
Johannes Lindeboom was born 26 August 1882 in Deventer, son to maths teacher Lucas Jochem Lindeboom and Jacoba Gravendahl. On 21 August 1908, Lindeboom married Gijsbertha Maria Adriani. The couple had two children: a son and a daughter.
After completing the gymnasium high school, Lindeboom studied theology in Leiden. Whilst there, he considered G.J.P.J. Bolland and F. Pijper as his main teachers. The former heavily influenced his methodical thinking, whilst the latter shaped him into a church historian. After passing his doctoral exams in 1906, he was named a ‘proponent’ in 1908 and consequently offered a position as a Dutch Reform predikant in Ouddorp. Here, in 1909, he completed his dissertation ‘Erasmus, onderzoek naar zijne theologie en zijn godsdienstig gemoedsbestaan.’ From 1911 until 1914, Lindeboom was a predikant at the Dutch Reform municipalities Berkhout (1911-1913) and Veendam (1914). After this, he became Professor of church- and dogmatic history at the University of Groningen. At the start, he was also responsible for teaching Ethics, but A.J. Sopper was appointed for this position in 1918. In 1938 Lindeboom was granted membership of the ‘Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen’ (Dutch Royal Academy). Besides his academic work, he was an active member of several societies and organisations. Among those are the ‘Vereniging van Vrijzinnig Hervormden’, the ‘Nederlands Archief voor Kerkgeschiedenis’, the ‘Provinciale Groningse Archeologische Commissie’ as well as the ‘Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie’.
Recurring themes in Lindeboom’s work are the relationship between religion and reason, as well as the relationship between Christianity and culture. Together with his colleague J.N. Bakhuizen van den Brink, Lindeboom wrote the seminal work Handboek der Kerkgeschiedenis. He is also known for his revised edition of J. Reitsma’s Geschiedenis van de Hervorming en de Hervormde Kerk der Nederlanden from 1893. As a supporter of liberal Protestantism and Christian humanism, Lindeboom was an important figure in the reformation of the Dutch Reform Church.
