Biography:

Casper Labuschagne (Heilbron, 4 April 1929 - Haren, 5 October 2019) studied theology and Semitic languages at the University of Pretoria and the University of Groningen from 1947-1956. In March 1962, he obtained his doctorate cum laude with E.S. Mulder.

From 1957-1967 he was pastor for the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and from 1959 also lecturer at the University of Pretoria. As a pastor, he spoke out emphatically against apartheid. This prompted his resignation as pastor (1967) and also hindered his career prospects at the University of Pretoria. From 1967 until his retirement in 1991, Labuschagne was a lecturer and later professor at the University of Groningen in the fields of Ancient Israelite Literature and Old Testament Exegesis. At the same time, Labuschagne did remain involved in the struggle for social justice in South Africa and against apartheid ideology in the church.
