Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Freek Knetsch was born in Leiden 24 June 1924. He is the son of Alida de Vries and Adriaan Knetsch. In 1961 Freek married Annie M. Taanman. The couple divorced in the early 1970’s. In 1977 Freek remarried, this time to Margreet Reidel, who had 2 children already.

From 1947 until 1956, Knetsch studied theology at the University of Leiden. After this, he became a teacher in high school of religious studies and philosophy of life. He taught at the ‘Christelijk Lyceum’ in Delft and the ‘Koningin Wilhelmina College’ in Culemborg. At the same time, he was working on his dissertation entitled Pierre Jurieu, theoloog en politikus der Refuge, which passed in 1967. In 1969, Knetsch was named a lecturer in Dutch church history, the encyclopedia of religious studies and introduction to theology at the University of Groningen. This position was upgraded to a full professorship just a year later. Besides his teaching duties, Knetsch was the dean of the faculty and a member of the faculty board. Furthermore, he was a member of the ‘Onderwijsraad’, an advisory board to the government. Partly in thanks to this he was named a ‘Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw’ in 1989, a royal decoration. Besides this, he was part of the board for the ‘Vereniging voor Nederlandse Kerkgeschiedenis’ and an editor for the Documentatieblad van de Nederlandse kerkgeschiedenis na 1800 as well as the Biografisch lexicon voor de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse protestantisme and the periodical In de waagschaal. In 1989, Knetsch retired, but kept publishing at an impressive rate. His main areas of research interest were French Protestantism (Hugenot refugees in the Netherlands), the 16th century church offices and the history of the diaconate.
