Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Sien Jensema was born in 1896 in Stedum. She published several novels in the Hogelandster dialect, among which were Berend Kopstubber (1939) and Hidde Betuun (1952). Her farm ‘Niehof’ in Stedum was the meeting point for the ‘Stemer Kringe,’ a regionalist group that regularly met to talk and catch up. This group had originated from meetings held at the Volkshogeschool in Uithuizen. Together with poet Jan Boer, Jensema was the main driving force behind the periodical Maandblad Groningen, a linguistic magazine that published about regional accents and the study of these accents. Sien Jensema played an important role of the preservation and valuation of Groningen language and culture. In 1952 she received an award from the province. She passed away in 1994, at her second home in Garderen (Gelderland).

Acquisition

The collection was donated to the University Library by Jensema’s heirs in 1995.

The archive contains letters, notes, speeches, manuscripts, typescripts, newspaper clippings, pictures, invitations, etc. There are also 350+ books.

The collection is accessible for research purposes. To look at the collection, a University Library Access Pass is required.

The materials in this collection are available for viewing only. They cannot be borrowed. When consulting this collection, the rules set out in the Reglement voor de gebruikers van de Bibliotheek der Rijksuniversiteit Groningen apply. Reproductions, insofar as they are allowed are to be made in line with the rules set out in the Tarieven en diensten Bibliotheek der Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

The copyright is held by the heirs of Sien Jensema. As the owner of the collection, the University of Groningen holds the publishing rights.

An inventory of the personal archive is available. A list of the books is also available. Most of Jensema’s published works, which are not part of the archive, are available at the Univeristy Library and can be requested through the catalogue.
