Provenance and acquisition
Biography
Prof. Johan Huizinga (Groningen, December 7, 1872 – De Steeg, February 1, 1945) studied Dutch Literature in his native city of Groningen and obtained his doctorate there in 1897 on “The Vidusaka in the Indian Theater”. Although he did not limit himself to historiography, Huizinga achieved fame as a cultural historian of the Middle Ages. Works such as Autumn of the Middle Ages and Homo Ludens are still considered highlights in the cultural studies of the past century. The importance of his work was recognized during his lifetime and brought Huizinga many prominent positions, both in the academic world and beyond. For example, he was president of the Literature Department of the KNAW for thirteen years and in 1938 vice-president of the International Commission for Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations. He was also successively professor in Groningen and in Leiden. The last years of Huizinga's life coincided with the Second World War, which he spent in 1938 first as a hostage and later as an exile outside his hometown of Leiden in De Steeg, a village close to Arnhem. He died there, after a short illness, at the age of 73.
