Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Anton Gerard van Hamel (Haarlem, 17 January 1842 – Amsterdam, 15 April 1907) was a Dutch priest, professor of French language and literature and editor of the literary magazine De Gids. In 1863 he had passed both his kandidaatsexamen and his doctoral exam in theology at the University of Groningen, and left to spend a year in Geneva. On 6 October 1864 he enrolled at the University of Leiden, where his father Joost Adriaan van Hamel was a pastor. In 1866 Van Hamel became an assistant pastor in Brussels and in 1867 he worked as an assistant pastor in Leiden. From 1868 until 1872, Van Hamel was the pastor of the Walloon church in Leeuwarden, and then of that same church in Rotterdam. He held this post until 1879, when he quit for ethical reasons. He turned a new leaf and went to Paris, to study French and Romance language philology under Gaston Paris and Arsène Darmesteter. During the academic year 1883-1884, Van Hamel was taught by Ferdinand de Saussure, then professor of Gothic and Old High German at the Ecole des Hautes Études. Around this time, Van Hamel was in contact with Conrad Busken Huet, who was living in Paris.

From 1880-1884, Van Hamel was the editor of the magazine Los en Vast. In 1884, he accepted a professorship in French at the University of Groningen, becoming the first person to hold this position. His inaugural lecture was titled La chaire de français dans une université néerlandaise. In 1897 Van Hamel, then rector magnificus, lectured on the essential French spirit and how this is reflected within the French language and literature. Starting in 1887, Van Hamel combined his academic duties with being the editor of literary magazine De Gids.

In 1907 Van Hamel retired to dedicate himself to his studies in Paris. He passed away that same year.
