Provenance and acquisition
Biography
Before the second world war, Elsa van Dien-Hendrix was a librarian in Amsterdam. The special collection of children’s books in Groningen is named after her because she organized an exhibition featuring these books. The exhibition became well known throughout the country, and was also shown in Surinam and the Dutch Antilles. After the war, Dien-Hendrix worked at the documentation centre of Dutch newspaper Het Parool, where she was colleagues with Annie M.G. Schmidt, an author of Dutch children’s books. Furthermore, she worked for the Provinciale Bibliotheek Centrales of Overijssel and Noord-Holland. She wrote reviews for periodicals and magazines and taught youth services librarianship. Her biggest accomplishment in the field of children’s literature and librarianship is her travelling exhibition, which gained wide spread acclaim. The exhibition was commissioned by the Bureau voor Aesthetische Adviezen in Amsterdam. The exhibition was met with rave reviews in the newspapers, as can be seen in the snippets collected by Van Dien-Hendrix.
