Biography
Johannes Cannegieter was born 10 February 1731 in Arnhem, to parents Hendrik Cannegieter (1691-1770) and Rachel Muijs. Hendrik was a well-known philologist, archeologist and historian. He had been rector and professor at the Latin school in Arnhem since 1720 and became the official historian of Gelderland in 1763.
Johannes attended the Latin school run by his father, and went to Franeker in 1750 to study law. His brother Herman (1723-1804) had just started work there as the law professor. In 1753 he was listed as a candidaat in de rechten in the album studiosorum, meaning he had passed the exams. In 1754 he successfully defended his dissertation ‘Dissert, continens expos. Difficillimorum nonnullarum iuris Rom. Capit.’. He returned to Arnhem where he started working as a lawyer, which he would continue to do until the start of his own professorship.
In 1768 his ‘Dom. Ulpiani fragmenta libri Regularum singularis et veterum et Observationum miscellan. Liber singularis.’ was printed in Utrecht.
When professor of civil law D.G. van der Keessel left the University of Groningen in 1769 to start work in Leiden, the curatoren of the University gave King Willem V a shortlist of eight suitable replacements. Cannegieter was chosen, and on 5 may 1770 he was introduced as the new professor of civil law to the senaat of the university. His inaugural lecture was held on 13 June, and 5 days later he gave his first ‘lectio publica’. At first, Cannegieter focused solely on the introduction to law studies and Roman law. Starting 1773 he also lectured on criminal law. Later still he expanded his repertoire to include history of law, Groninger law, statistiek des Vaderlands, and the practical application of law.
Contents and collation
The archive contains pieces concerning both Cannegieter’s personal life as well as his professional life.
The personal items (among others) are a last will & testament, inventory of goods and his certificates that allow him to practice law.
The professional pieces contain (among others): his inaugural lecture, lecture notes and published works, legal advice, correspondence, and certificates of membership for several societies. Furthermore, the archive contains pieces about the Fraterhuis in Groningen. As evidenced by his notes on hunebedden and Roman inscriptions, Cannegieter was also a keen amateur archeologist.
The archive was apparently donate in numbered folders: the numbers present are 33, 34, 37, 38, 47, 49, 52, 53, 56a, 124, 125 and 126. Apparently, Johannes Cannegieter’s documents were part of a larger archive that concerned multiple members of the Cannegieter family. More documents from and about Johannes Cannegieter are housed in the RHC Groninger Archieven (mainly lectures and speeches).
