Provenance and acquisition
Biography:
Hendrikus van Berkum was born on 3 November 1814 in Wanswerd, as the son of a preacher. Like his father, Hendrikus became a preacher and served successively the congregations of Wolsum, Westhem, Stiens, and Nieuw-Beerta. He died on November 7, 1871, in Nieuw-Beerta.
Van Berkum also made translations of edifying German booklets and wrote romantic-historical works in which he outlined the pietistic movement in the Netherlands in the late seventeenth century.
His two most important books are De Labadie en de Labadisten: eene bladzijde uit de geschiedenis der Nederlandsche Hervormde Kerk (1851) and Antoinette Bourignon: een beeld uit de kerkelijke geschiedenis der XVIIde eeuw (1853).
Acquisition: Donation by the Museum of Antiquities.
