          Biography

         

Kornelis Sneyders de Vogel was born in Schiedam on 27 December 1876. He attended grammar school there, then studied classical literature at Leiden, where he obtained his doctorate in 1903 with a thesis: Quaestiones ad coniunctivi usum in posteriore latinitate pertinentes. From 1901 to 1904, he attended lectures in Paris at the Sorbonne, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, the Ecole des Chartes and the Collège de France.

 

In 1920, he succeeded Jean-Jacques Salverda de Grave and held the chair of Roman philology at the University of Groningen. He did so until his retirement in 1946. His specialities were in French, Provençal, Old Spanish, Old Italian and Vulgar Latin.

 

Sneyders de Vogel published numerous contributions in the journal Neophilologus.

 

He was an honorary doctor of the universities of Montpellier and Lyon.

 

He died in Groningen on 26 August 1958.
