Tammes Room

One of the rooms in the University of Groningen Library (UB) is named after prof. Jantina Tammes (1871-1947). She went to an all-girls secondary school after which she attended lectures at the University of Groningen in biology, physics, and chemistry. After gaining both grades of secondary-school teaching qualifications, she became an unpaid assistant in the botanical laboratory in 1897. She concentrated on genetic research and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1911 for her work. Her first salaried appointment followed in 1912. In 1919 she became the second Dutch woman to be appointed professor by special appointment in Variability and Genetics.
